Does Taking Prenatal Vitamins Help You Get Pregnant?

When a woman begins thinking about starting a family, maintaining a healthy diet and lifestyle becomes a top priority. While many women begin taking supplements after they conceive, some research shows that prenatal vitamins may be helpful for pregnancy and may possibly boost fertility.  Of course, there are many factors that influence a woman’s fertility, and while taking prenatal vitamins will not guarantee to increase your odds of conceiving, the high level of nutrients in these types of supplements can still potentially improve your odds of achieving and maintaining healthy pregnancy.

Most doctors suggest beginning a regimen of prenatal vitamins as soon as you begin thinking about starting a family. The reason prenatal supplements are recommended prior to conception is that most of a baby’s vital organs develop within the first 10 weeks following conception, often well before a woman even knows she is pregnant. By taking the vitamins in advance, a mother-to-be can ensure that the fetus she is carrying receives all of the essential vitamins, minerals and nutrients it needs during this critical developmental phase. And, as far as fertility is concerned, these power-packed supplements can fill in nutritional gaps that might hinder pregnancy.

There are many different types of prenatal vitamins available, and reading labels can be confusing.  Doctors suggest that women who are pregnant or trying to become pregnant choose a prenatal vitamin that includes the following:

  • Folic acid: 400 to 800 micrograms
  • Calcium: 250 milligrams
  • Iron: 30 milligrams
  • Zinc: 15 milligrams
  • Copper: 2 milligrams
  • Vitamin B-6: 2 milligrams
  • Vitamin D: 400 international units

Pregnancy is a special time in a woman’s life. Taking care of your own health is the first step to having a healthy pregnancy and delivering a healthy baby. If starting a family has become a priority in your life, beginning a supplement program that includes the use of prenatal vitamins for pregnancy and prenatal vitamins for fertility enhancement can go a long way towards improving your odds of successfully conceiving.

Today, there are many different prenatal vitamin formulas to choose from, including pills, capsules and new easy-to-swallow liquid formulas, so it’s relatively easy to find a supplement that is right for you. Of course, before beginning any supplement regimen, always speak with your healthcare provider first, and remember that even the best vitamin supplement is not a substitute for a healthy balanced diet.
