Key Prenatal Vitamins for a Healthy Pregnancy

According to the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, women who are expecting should take 600 micrograms of folic acid and 27 milligrams of iron on a daily basis. While pregnancy vitamins should always serve as a supplement to a healthy, balanced diet, a high quality prenatal vitamin supplement can serve as “gap insurance” even for those who are nutritiously conscientious.

Many women who start a prenatal vitamin regimen prior to conceiving continue taking supplements throughout the pregnancy, and even after the baby is born. The American Pregnancy Association says “postnatal” use of vitamins boost the nutritional value of breast milk and may even help balance mood swings and minimize the chance of postpartum depression.

Although few people argue against the need for prenatal vitamins, the idea of a daily handful of pills can be difficult to stomach, literally. Thankfully, some of the new powdered and drinkable formulas are much easier to take, and cause fewer issues with stomach irritation and upset.

“Getting adequate nutritional support before, during and after pregnancy is essential for the health of the mother and baby,” says Los Angeles OB/GYN Dr. David Ghozland. “Drinkable formulas are easy to take and provide the nutritional support a new  mother needs to support the well being of her child.”

According to the American Pregnancy Association, the main vitamins and minerals a pregnant woman needs on a daily basis include:

  • Calcium: 1000-1300mg
  • Folic acid: 400mg
  • Iron: 27mg
  • Iodine: 150mcg
  • Vitamin D: 5mcg

Supplements loaded with these levels of vitamins and minerals can help support a healthy nervous and immune system, provide an energy boost, and enhance bone health. Of course, every woman and every pregnancy is unique, and women who are thinking of starting a family should always consult with their OB/GYN prior to starting any kind of supplement program. Dr. Ghozland recommends looking into powered and drinkable pregnancy vitamins as a way to ensure proper nutrition during the 9 months a woman is literally “eating for two,” and continuing on the regimen while breast feeding. Getting all of the required nutrients during this special time is the best way attain optimal nutritional support when you need it most.
